Christmas Crack Saltine Toffee Bark - featured image

This dangerously easy holiday treat combines crispy saltine crackers, buttery toffee, and smooth chocolate, topped with festive sprinkles or candies. Perfect for gifting, potlucks, or cozy nights in, it’s a nostalgic, crowd-pleasing bark that comes together in under 30 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 40 saltine crackers (about 1 sleeve)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks, 226g)
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar (200g, light or dark)
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips (340g)
  • 1/2 cup holiday sprinkles, crushed candy canes, or M&Ms (optional, 75g)
  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
  • Nonstick cooking spray or parchment paper

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a large rimmed baking sheet (10×15-inch) with parchment paper or foil and lightly spray with nonstick cooking spray.
  2. Arrange saltine crackers in a single layer to cover the pan completely. Break crackers to fit if needed.
  3. In a medium saucepan, melt butter and brown sugar over medium heat, stirring constantly. Once bubbling, cook for 3 minutes, stirring the whole time until thickened and caramel-colored.
  4. Immediately pour the hot toffee over the crackers and spread quickly and evenly with a spatula.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes, until the toffee is bubbling but not burnt.
  6. Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle chocolate chips over the hot toffee. Let sit for 2-3 minutes until softened, then spread into a smooth layer.
  7. Top with holiday sprinkles, crushed candy canes, M&Ms, or other toppings while chocolate is still soft. Sprinkle with sea salt.
  8. Cool at room temperature for 30 minutes, then transfer to the fridge for 1-2 hours (or freezer for 30 minutes) until fully set.
  9. Lift bark out using parchment and break or cut into pieces.
  10. Serve on a platter or package in tins/bags for gifting. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week, or in the fridge for 2 weeks.

Notes

For gluten-free, use gluten-free crackers or matzo. Dairy-free butter and chocolate chips work well for vegan adaptation. Add nuts, dried fruit, or different candies for variety. Chill bark for crisp texture; use parchment for easy release. If chocolate chips don’t melt, return pan to warm oven for 1 minute. Bark stores well and flavors deepen after a day.
