Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups (480 ml) whole milk
  • 1/2 cup (120 ml) heavy cream
  • 2 tbsp (12 g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup (43 g) dark chocolate chips
  • 2 tbsp (30 ml) molasses
  • 2 tbsp (24 g) brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Whipped cream (optional)
  • Crushed gingerbread cookies (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a medium-sized saucepan, combine 2 cups (480 ml) whole milk and 1/2 cup (120 ml) heavy cream. Heat over medium-low heat until warm but not boiling. Stir occasionally.
  2. Whisk in 2 tbsp (12 g) unsweetened cocoa powder and 1/4 cup (43 g) dark chocolate chips. Continue stirring until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth.
  3. Add 2 tbsp (30 ml) molasses, 2 tbsp (24 g) brown sugar, 1/2 tsp ground ginger, 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon, and 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg. Whisk well to combine.
  4. Simmer the mixture for 2-3 minutes, stirring frequently, until the flavors meld together and the hot chocolate is steaming.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in 1 tsp vanilla extract.
  6. Pour the hot chocolate into mugs. Top with whipped cream and garnish with crushed gingerbread cookies, if desired.

Notes

Whisk constantly to avoid clumping, and don’t let the milk boil. Customize the spices and sweetness to your taste. Toppings like whipped cream and crushed gingerbread cookies enhance the presentation.
