A warm, comforting drink blending melted butter, warm spices, and rich dark rum, perfect for chilly evenings and holiday gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar (light or dark)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch (about 1/8 teaspoon) ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 ounces dark rum (such as Mount Gay, Bacardi 8, or Myers’s Rum)
  • 68 ounces boiling water
  • Optional garnishes: cinnamon stick, orange peel twist, star anise pod

Instructions

  1. In a small mixing bowl, combine softened unsalted butter with packed brown sugar.
  2. Add ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and ground cloves. Mix well until fully incorporated and smooth.
  3. Stir in pure vanilla extract.
  4. Warm your mug by pouring boiling water into it, then discard the water.
  5. Spoon about 2 tablespoons of the prepared spiced butter mixture into the warmed mug.
  6. Add 2 ounces of dark rum over the spiced butter in the mug and gently stir.
  7. Slowly pour 6-8 ounces of boiling water into the mug, stirring continuously to blend the butter and sugar evenly.
  8. Add optional garnishes like a cinnamon stick, orange peel, or star anise if desired.
  9. Sip carefully and enjoy the creamy, warm drink.

Notes

Use softened butter at room temperature for best blending. Warm the mug before preparing the drink to keep it hot longer. Stir gently to maintain a creamy frothy top. For dairy-free, substitute butter with coconut oil or vegan butter. Adjust sweetness by reducing brown sugar or using alternatives like coconut sugar or erythritol.
