Runza Casserole - featured image

A buttery, flaky crescent roll casserole filled with seasoned ground beef, onions, and cabbage, baked to golden perfection. This comfort food is perfect for busy weeknights or potlucks.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 2 cups fresh shredded cabbage
  • 1 yellow onion, finely diced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 2 tubes refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • Optional: 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef until no longer pink, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain any excess grease if necessary.
  3. Add butter to the skillet with the cooked beef. Toss in the diced onion and shredded cabbage. Cook until the cabbage is softened, about 5-7 minutes. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
  4. Stir in a dash of Worcestershire sauce if desired.
  5. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and roll out one tube of crescent roll dough into the bottom, pinching the seams together.
  6. Spread the beef and cabbage mixture evenly over the crescent roll dough. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top.
  7. Roll out the second tube of crescent roll dough and place it over the filling, pinching seams together to seal.
  8. Bake the casserole for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and flaky.
  9. Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

[‘If the top starts browning too quickly, cover it with foil for the last few minutes of baking.’, ‘Cold crescent roll dough is easier to handle and will bake up flakier.’, ‘You can make the filling a day in advance and refrigerate it. Assemble and bake when ready.’]
