A quick and easy recipe for crispy, buttery garlic shrimp made in the air fryer, perfect as a snack or appetizer with a crunchy coating and juicy interior.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound (450g) raw shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 3 tablespoons (45g) unsalted butter, melted
  • 3 large garlic cloves, minced
  • ½ cup (60g) panko breadcrumbs
  • ¼ cup (25g) grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • Optional: pinch of red pepper flakes

Instructions

  1. Prepare the garlic butter: In a small bowl, combine the melted butter and minced garlic. Stir well and set aside. Let the garlic infuse the butter for a few minutes to deepen the flavor.
  2. Mix the breadcrumb coating: In a separate bowl, combine panko breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan, lemon zest, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes if using. Stir to blend evenly.
  3. Coat the shrimp: Place the peeled and deveined shrimp in a large bowl. Pour the garlic butter over them and toss gently until each shrimp is well coated. Be gentle to avoid breaking or curling too tightly.
  4. Breadcrumb dredge: Add the breadcrumb mixture to the shrimp bowl. Toss again carefully to coat each shrimp with the crumb mixture. It should cling lightly without clumping.
  5. Preheat the air fryer: Set your air fryer to 400°F (200°C) and let it preheat for about 3 minutes.
  6. Arrange shrimp in the basket: Lay the shrimp in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Avoid overcrowding; cook in batches if necessary to keep them crispy.
  7. Air fry: Cook for 6–8 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through cooking to promote even browning. Shrimp should be golden and crispy on the outside and opaque inside.
  8. Serve immediately: Transfer the shrimp to a serving dish. Optionally, drizzle any remaining garlic butter over the top for extra richness. Garnish with fresh lemon wedges or chopped parsley if desired.

Notes

Do not skip preheating the air fryer for best crispiness. Use fresh garlic for superior flavor. Coat shrimp lightly and evenly to avoid clumping. Cook shrimp in a single layer to prevent steaming. Shake or flip shrimp halfway through cooking. Avoid overcooking to prevent rubbery texture. For gluten-free, use gluten-free panko or almond flour. For dairy-free, substitute butter with coconut oil or dairy-free margarine. Reheat leftovers in air fryer or oven to maintain crispiness; avoid microwaving.
