These crispy jalapeño popper wontons combine a golden crunchy exterior with a creamy, slightly spicy filling, paired perfectly with a sweet chili dipping sauce. They are quick, easy, and perfect for parties or casual get-togethers.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 2 fresh jalapeños, finely diced (remove seeds for less heat)
  • 1/2 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 package wonton wrappers (about 50 sheets)
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • Vegetable oil or canola oil for frying (about 2 inches deep)
  • 1/2 cup sweet chili sauce
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • Optional: pinch of crushed red pepper flakes

Instructions

  1. Prepare the filling: In a medium bowl, combine softened cream cheese, diced jalapeños, shredded cheddar, smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly until creamy and well blended.
  2. Set up your assembly station: Lay out wonton wrappers on a clean, dry surface. Keep a small bowl of beaten egg nearby for sealing.
  3. Fill the wontons: Place about 1 teaspoon of filling in the center of each wonton wrapper. Lightly brush edges with beaten egg, fold into a triangle, and press firmly to seal, removing air pockets. Optionally crimp edges with a fork.
  4. Heat the oil: Pour vegetable oil into a deep frying pan or pot to about 2 inches deep. Heat oil to 350°F (175°C) using a thermometer.
  5. Fry the wontons: Carefully place a few wontons into hot oil without overcrowding. Fry for 2-3 minutes per batch, turning occasionally until golden and crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  6. Make the dipping sauce: Whisk together sweet chili sauce, rice vinegar, soy sauce, and red pepper flakes if using. Adjust seasoning to taste.
  7. Serve warm: Plate wontons with dipping sauce on the side and enjoy fresh and crispy.

Notes

Maintain oil temperature at 350°F (175°C) to avoid soggy or burnt wontons. Do not overcrowd the fryer. Seal edges well with egg wash to prevent filling leakage. Fry wontons soon after assembling to keep wrappers crisp. For a gluten-free version, substitute wonton wrappers with rice paper or gluten-free wrappers. Baking option: bake at 400°F (200°C) for 12-15 minutes, flipping halfway.
