A quick and flavorful beef and broccoli dish made in the Instant Pot, delivering tender beef and crisp broccoli with a savory, slightly sweet sauce. Perfect for busy weeknights.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb (450g) flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 4 cups (about 300g) fresh broccoli florets
  • 1/3 cup (80ml) low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) beef broth or water
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce (optional)
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp fresh ginger, grated
  • 2 tbsp vegetable or canola oil
  • 1 tsp toasted sesame oil
  • Sesame seeds (optional garnish)

Instructions

  1. Slice the beef thinly against the grain into strips about 1/4 inch thick and set aside.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine soy sauce, beef broth, brown sugar, oyster sauce (if using), minced garlic, and grated ginger. Stir well to dissolve the sugar.
  3. Toss the sliced beef in half of the sauce mixture and marinate for 10-15 minutes.
  4. Set Instant Pot to ‘Sauté’ mode and heat vegetable oil. Brown the marinated beef in batches for 1-2 minutes per side without fully cooking. Remove beef and set aside.
  5. Pour the remaining sauce mixture into the pot and scrape the bottom with a wooden spoon to deglaze.
  6. Return the beef to the pot, close the lid, set valve to sealing, and cook on high pressure for 8 minutes.
  7. Perform a quick release, open the lid, and add broccoli florets on top without stirring.
  8. Close the lid again and cook on high pressure for 1 minute. Quick release immediately after.
  9. Remove beef and broccoli with a slotted spoon to a serving dish.
  10. Mix cornstarch with cold water to make a slurry, stir into the pot, and sauté for 1-2 minutes until sauce thickens.
  11. Pour thickened sauce over beef and broccoli, drizzle with toasted sesame oil, and sprinkle with sesame seeds if desired. Serve hot.

Notes

If Instant Pot gives a burn warning, add a splash more broth before pressure cooking. Slice beef thinly against the grain for tenderness. Use quick release to keep broccoli crisp. Thicken sauce after cooking with cornstarch slurry and add toasted sesame oil at the end to preserve flavor. For gluten-free, use tamari instead of soy sauce and omit oyster sauce or use gluten-free oyster sauce.
