A rich, creamy dessert made with custard-soaked bread and topped with a luscious whiskey sauce. Perfect for cozy evenings or special occasions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups bread, cubed (French bread, brioche, or challah)
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup raisins (optional)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup confectioners’ sugar
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream
  • 3 tablespoons whiskey

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
  2. Cut the bread into 1-inch cubes and place them into the greased baking dish. If using raisins, sprinkle them evenly over the bread.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until fully combined.
  4. Pour the custard mixture over the bread cubes, ensuring all pieces are coated. Use a spatula to gently press the bread down so it absorbs the liquid. Let it sit for 10 minutes to soak.
  5. Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 40-45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set. A knife inserted in the center should come out clean.
  6. While the bread pudding is baking, melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the confectioners’ sugar until smooth. Add the heavy cream and whiskey, and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens slightly.
  7. Let the bread pudding cool for 5-10 minutes after baking. Drizzle the warm whiskey sauce over the top before serving.

Notes

[‘Use day-old bread for better texture.’, ‘Let the bread soak in the custard for at least 10 minutes.’, ‘Adjust the whiskey sauce to taste by adding more whiskey if desired.’, ‘Cover the dish loosely with foil during the last 10 minutes of baking if the custard bubbles too much or browns too quickly.’, ‘Prepare the custard-soaked bread in advance and refrigerate overnight for convenience.’]
