mint julep recipe - featured image

A simple and refreshing classic mint julep cocktail made with fresh spearmint, bourbon, simple syrup, and crushed ice. Perfect for summer and easy to prepare.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 10 fresh spearmint leaves per drink, plus extra for garnish
  • 2 oz (60 ml) bourbon whiskey per serving
  • ½ oz (15 ml) simple syrup per serving (equal parts sugar and water, heated until dissolved and cooled)
  • Crushed ice
  • Lemon peel (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Gather your ingredients and tools. Chill your glass or julep cup in the freezer for about 10 minutes.
  2. Place about 10 fresh spearmint leaves in the glass or cup. Gently muddle the leaves with ½ oz (15 ml) of simple syrup, pressing lightly to release oils without bruising.
  3. Pour 2 oz (60 ml) of bourbon over the muddled mint and syrup.
  4. Fill the glass with crushed ice, packing it tightly to the top. Stir gently with a bar spoon for 10-15 seconds to chill and blend flavors.
  5. Top off with more crushed ice, mounding slightly above the rim for the classic julep look.
  6. Garnish with a fresh sprig of spearmint, clapping the mint between your hands to release oils before placing it on top. Optionally, add a twist of lemon peel.
  7. Serve immediately, optionally with a straw.

Notes

Use fresh spearmint for a milder, sweeter aroma. Muddle gently to avoid bitterness. Crushed ice chills quickly and melts slowly, preserving flavor. Chill the glass beforehand to keep the drink cold longer. Serve immediately for best flavor. Simple syrup can be made ahead and stored refrigerated for up to two weeks. Variations include using basil or lemon balm instead of mint, adding fresh berries, or making a non-alcoholic version with mint-infused iced green tea.
