A simple and flavorful slow cooker recipe for tender pulled pork sliders, perfect for parties and casual gatherings. The pork is slow-cooked to fall-apart tenderness and coated in a smoky, sweet, and tangy BBQ sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 to 4 pounds pork shoulder (Boston butt), well-marbled
  • 1 cup BBQ sauce (smoky, slightly sweet style recommended)
  • 1 medium yellow onion, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • About 12 small slider buns
  • Optional toppings: coleslaw, dill pickles, sliced jalapeños, cheddar cheese slices

Instructions

  1. Trim excess fat from the pork shoulder, leaving some for flavor and moisture. Pat dry with paper towels. Season generously on all sides with salt, pepper, smoked paprika, and chili powder.
  2. Optional: Heat a tablespoon of oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook for about 5 minutes until softened and slightly caramelized. Add minced garlic for the last minute.
  3. Place the sautéed onions and garlic at the bottom of the slow cooker. Set the seasoned pork shoulder on top.
  4. Pour the BBQ sauce and apple cider vinegar evenly over the meat, then sprinkle brown sugar on top.
  5. Cover and cook on low for 8 to 10 hours, or on high for 4 to 5 hours, until the pork is fork-tender and easily pulls apart.
  6. Remove pork from slow cooker and shred finely with two forks, discarding large chunks of fat.
  7. Return shredded pork to the slow cooker and stir into the juices and sauce.
  8. Slice slider buns and toast them lightly in a skillet or toaster to prevent sogginess.
  9. Assemble sliders by piling pulled pork onto buns and adding optional toppings. Serve immediately while warm.

Notes

Do not open the slow cooker lid frequently during cooking to avoid heat loss. Toast slider buns before assembling to prevent sogginess. If sauce is too thin after shredding, reduce it by simmering separately and then stir back in. For gluten-free, use gluten-free buns or lettuce wraps; for dairy-free, omit cheese or use vegan slices.
